EFT tapping is a powerful holistic healing technique that has been proven to effectively reduce stress by bringing down the flight or flight reaction in the body. It’s based on the combined principles of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. By reducing stress and calming your nervous system, you are better able to think clearly about a situation and take action.
Every experience that we have produces a physical and emotional reaction in our body. Negative experiences often produce stress and cause us to try to avoid similar situations whether on a conscious or subconscious level. When our body and mind are tense, our brain goes into fight, flight or freeze mode. Our brain believes that we are under attack and focuses on keeping us alive. This can make it challenging to think clearly, stay calm or make rational decisions. Our negative association with the issue continues and the cycle repeats itself.
How Tapping Can Help Reduce Stress
Tapping is done by using your fingertips to tap on specific meridian points on your body while focusing on your negative thoughts and feelings. One of the things I like about it is that because you are talking and tapping, it forces you to be focused and present. As you tap and speak, your body will start to relax and your mind will slow down and feel more clear. Once you have cleared the negative emotions, you continue to tap as you reframe the issue and begin to think about it in a different way. By the end of the tapping session, you should feel calmer and more relaxed with a better idea of how to deal with the situation. You can read more about the research that’s been done on the physical impact of tapping here.
Tapping is a great way to alleviate stress in the moment but here are longer term benefits as well. Over time, you will find that it shifts your thinking about yourself and the world. I use tapping with my clients to help them look at the beliefs and feelings that are keeping them stuck. As we relax the body through the tapping process, the emotions attached these thoughts and feelings are neutralized and it is easier to let them go. Then, we reprogram the brain with positive thoughts that better serve the client so that they are able to move forward in their life.
